Call for Applications: Fellowship for Creative/Design Practitioners (Due 6/11)

The Robert L. Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studiesthe Mellon Initiative for Inclusive Faculty Excellence and the Initiative for the Study of Power, Politics, and Organizing in the United States are pleased to invite candidates for a terminal master’s degree in any di­­scipline at Parsons to apply for a fellowship to support their capstone or thesis project (or the equivalent) during the 2021-2022 academic year.  The selected candidate will receive an award of $15,000. ­­

During the period of their fellowship, recipients will: 

  • be in residence in New York (with accommodations made for COVID19)
  • participate in the biweekly seminars of the Mellon Initiative, presenting their work in progress once 
  • present their project once to students and faculty at the Heilbroner Center 

Successful applications will propose projects that use artistic and design strategies and/or scholarly approaches to visualize, document, engage, analyze, interpret, critique and/or propose solutions to problems and inequalities arising from capitalism.  It is essential that projects engage race and/or indigeneity. 

We seek projects that sit at the intersection of capitalism and race and/or indigeneity.  Projects might engage the following topics, approaches and/or objectives:

  • visualization of structures of capitalism and power
  • visions and embodiments of inclusive justice 
  • race, racism, and the built environment
  • egalitarian and sustainable infrastructures for a green economy
  • prison abolition and alternatives to incarceration
  • labor and inequality
  • decolonization of design and creative practices
  • narrative, storytelling, and documentary approaches
  • data visualization
  • socially engaged art practices and participatory design approaches
  • speculative approaches for just futures
  • advancement of intersectional and global movements for social justice

Proposals of no more than 2 double-spaced pages should include:

1) narrative description of the project which explains 

  • the project’s engagement with capitalism and power 
  • the project’s focus on race and/or indigenity

2) timeline that identifies the work to be completed during the fellowship period

3) resume (no more than 1 additional page) with 

  • links to relevant art/design work 
  • contact information of your thesis advisor and committee members
  • amount of any other awards or fellowships received for the 2021-2022 academic year.
