Towards a New Democratic Political Economy
Project Description
Towards a New Democratic Political Economy is a multi-year project that brings together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to rethink the relationship between capitalism and democracy in the twenty-first century. Supported by the Open Society Foundations, the project seeks to identify new institutional arrangements and policy pathways that can strengthen democratic governance while addressing the economic and social challenges of our time.
The project is organized around a set of thematic branches that explore key dimensions of a new democratic political economy — from global governance and industrial policy, to labor markets, inequality, and climate transition. Each bucket convenes a team of researchers who develop fresh analysis, empirical research, and policy proposals that speak to both academic debates and pressing public concerns.
Our goal is not only to advance scholarly knowledge, but also to generate ideas that resonate with policymakers, civil society, and broader publics. By engaging across disciplines and regions, Towards a New Democratic Political Economy aims to expand the horizons of what is politically and economically possible, and to contribute to building more inclusive, resilient, and democratic futures.
