Race and Capitalism
Historians’ recent investigations grounding the origins of capitalism in racialized chattel slavery — along with activists’ efforts to expose the ongoing legacies of that slavery and of post-abolition racial oppressions — inspire a broad reconsideration of the interconnections between capitalism and race, both across time and around the world. The Race and Capitalism Research Group at the Robert L. Heilbroner Center pursues interdisciplinary inquiry into how historical and present-day forms of race-making and racism shape capitalism, and how, in turn, capitalism consistently depends upon a profound – but ever-shifting — set of entitlements, inequalities, and dominations that we apprehend as “race.”
