Budi Akmal Djafar is a PhD candidate in Economics at the New School for Social Research. His dissertation investigates the implications of international trade and the rise of global production networks on national income and gender based employment in the manufacturing sector in Indonesia from 1970-2010. The dissertation also studies Indonesia’s political economy and the role of institutions in promoting economic growth and industrialization since liberalization period in the 1970s. His work aims to put forth policy framework for sustainable growth trajectory and development agenda for newly emerging economies in Asia, particularly for Indonesia. Prior to pursuing his doctorate degree at the New School, Budi worked at the public sector in Indonesia.
