History Talk: Edward Baptist - The Half Has Never Been Told: U.S. Slavery and Nineteenth Century Capitalism

The New School’s History Department presents Edward E. Baptist.

Baptist teaches at Cornell University, where he is an associate professor of history and the House Professor-Dean of Carl Becker House. His latest book, The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism was just published by Basic Books. He offers courses on the history of slavery, history of capitalism, digital history, and the nineteenth-century U.S.

Baptist’s new book was subject to a controversial book review at The Economist, leading the publication to apologize and clarify their belief that slavery was an “evil system.” It also led to the hashtag game #economistbookreviews.
